Humidity and Your Piano

Your piano’s intonation - and its health - is directly related to the humidity of your home. Usually, your piano will be sharp when the humidity is high (>50%) and flat when the humidity is low (<40%). Pianos which experience large humidity swings will go out of tune more quickly and are more susceptible to structural issues.

Homes in Ohio tend to be dry in the winter and humid in the summer. This means that your piano will likely be flat in the winter and sharp in the summer. You can mitigate the effects of seasonal humidity shifts by storing your piano in a climate-controlled and well-insulated part of your home and by installing humidity control in your piano.

Andrew Kovaleski Piano Tuning, LLC strongly recommends the use of the Piano Life Saver in all pianos, not only those in difficult climate situations. Either of the available systems greatly improves the intonation stability of your piano by monitoring its climate and humidifying or dehumidifying according to its minute-to-minute needs. AKPT, LLC was a top installer nationally for Piano Life Saver systems in 2023.
